Introduction to Resources
What’s available?
StuP project resources for HE Lecturers and Teaching Staff are of two main types.
First, there are resources to assist Lecturers to introduce three innovative modes of coursework in their host institution, i.e. research-based briefing papers, teachers’ resource packs, and Introductions to Field Locations (a pre field course, literature based exercise). Several resources are provided for each: (i) guidance for student authors (ii) templates for manual and automatic formatting of coursework (iii) assessment guidance for academic staff (only briefing papers and teachers’ resource packs) (iv) marking proformas for coursework feedback for use by academic staff (only briefing papers and teachers’ resource packs) (v) exemplars, i.e. examples of good practice.
Second, there are resources to assist Lecturers to introduce student publishing projects in their host institution. These encompass all stages of the publication process, i.e. (i) guidance for referees (who in StuP, are non-academics and are likely not to be experienced in reviewing work for publication) (ii) guidance for student authors (which is focused on working with a referee’s report) (iii) sample letters for student authors and referees for each stage of the publication process (iv) referee’s report proforma (v) templates for maintaining an administrative record of the publication process.
User notes
Resources which users may wish to adapt to the particular requirements of their host institution, or for which options are available (e.g. letters will be addressed to different people each time) are provided as Microsoft Word files. Other files (or copies of the same documents) are presented as Adobe ‘Portable Document Files’. Files can be downloaded from the Bute Geographies website to your own server/PC by clicking the appropriate file icon. It is assumed that users are competent with, or will seek support within their institution to attain competence with, Microsoft Word, in particular with its ‘cut and paste’ editing technique and ‘Mail Merge’ function.
As some users will employ the cut and paste technique of customising resources (manual means), the files which have the potential to be used with the Mail Merge function for customising resources (automatic means) have not been converted to Mail Merge format. All users should note that those fields (data items) which will vary between documents are identifiable in the master file by a ‘triple alphabetic descriptor’ (e.g. AAA). Options for these fields are presented in the data file linked to the master file: these options are set forth in a column with the same heading (e.g. AAA).
Restrictions on use
StuP aims to generate resources for the use of the GEES Higher Education community in the UK and beyond. There are no restrictions on use when material is being used for teaching within the host institution of the user (either in its original form, or after adaptation). Indeed, this is strongly encouraged. However, permission must be attained from the Project Team if the user intends to utilise any material from the Bute Geographies website in publications, or for other means of professional or commercial gain. Users should note that copyright has been assigned to the Project Team for all material on the Bute Geographies site, unless otherwise stated.
